Wash One Another's Feet - John 13:14  by Kerrie Mau

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.” -John 13:14

We are naturally selfish people. Think about it. From the day we were born into the world, all that concerns us is “me, myself and I.” An infant would not think, “Oh, mommy is busy. I can wait a while to be fed.” Needs must be met immediately until we learn later in our lives, if fostered by a suitable environment, to delay gratifications.

We also live in a culture that tells people to do whatever they want to do, in whatever way they like it. “My way or the highway” is the motto of this culture. Selfishness is praised as smart thinking, whereas selflessness is considered dumb.

As a result, relationships are disintegrating. Divorce rate, even among Christians, is higher than ever before. If this culture continues, this society is going to fall apart because relationships are indispensable in any society.

Being the salt of the world, we Christians have the responsibility to preserve the goodness in this world. This year’s theme is an attempt to encourage believers to go against the worldly culture by becoming more mature Christians through the modeling of Jesus, more particularly Jesus’ washing His disciples’ feet.

In Philippians 2: 3b-5 Paul wrote “in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.”

Let’s put down our pride this winter and come to learn to be imitators of Christ, and impact our generation through a renewal of relationships.
