Here are Dr. Richard Yen's notes on personal evangelism. If you have questions or need help, feel free to contact him

SCRIPT FOR PERSONAL EVANGELISM USING THE BIBLE

1. Sit next to the newcomer before the end of the program and before he/she stands up.
2. Say, "Hi, my name is _____________. What is your name?"
3. Be friendly but direct: "Have you ever received Jesus into your heart as your Savior?"

(Do not ask fuzzy questions like "Are you a Christian?", "Do you believe in God?"
"Do you go to church?" These questions elicit answers that are not useful.)

4. Ask: "Would it be all right for me to spend about 10 minutes to share with you how to receive Jesus as Savior?" or why it is important to receive Jesus as Savior.

a. "No": Why not?
b. "Yes": turn to Mark 1:15. Have newcomer read it. Counselor must not read it for newcomer. Newcomer's faith must be built on the Bible, not you.

5. Question One: "God has a Kingdom for us. He wants us to become His citizens. What
are the two things that we must do in order to enter His Kingdom?"

a. "Repent"
b. "Believe in the Gospel."

6. Connecting question: "Why do we need to repent?" Possible answers:

a. "I don't know"
b. "I am not sure"
c. "Because we have sin etc. etc."

To all three responses say, "Let us look at Romans 3:23." Have him read it.

7. Question Two: "When God created mankind, He wanted us to be like Him. But we failed God and never cared about Him. The Bible called this "sin" and said that all have sinned. Do you agree/Does this make sense to you?" Possible answers:

a. "Yes, I agree" (Ask "Why would you agree?" to encourage sharing)
b. "No, I disagree/don't know what you are talking about."

8. Regardless of response, then ask: (let the newcomer provide the analogy)

a. "Who in your family is closest to you?" ("Mom" or whoever)
b. "Have you ever quarreled with your mom?" ("Of course")
c. " Was the relationship strained after you fought? " ("Of course")
d. "What do you do to repair the relationship?" ("Say sorry")
e. "This is the same with God. We have offended Him, we should repent."

9. Connection question: "Jesus also said we have to believe the gospel. What is the Gospel?" Possible answers: "I know" or "I don't know"
"Let us read I Cor 15:3-5" Have him read it.

10. Question Three: "What are the two things that Jesus did for us?"

a. "Yes, He died for our sins." "When someone did something wrong, he has to pay for the consequences. We offended God and so we should be punished. But God loved us. He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross to bear the punishment for us. "
"Don't you think we should be thankful?"
b. "Yes, He also resurrected for us." "This proved that He has the power to overcome death." "If we receive Jesus into our lives, we can also have this
power in us." "Don't you think that this is good news?"

11. Connecting statement: " It is not enough to know these facts, we must receive Jesus into our hearts." Let us read Revelation 3:20. Have him read it.

12. Question Four: "How many steps must a person go through before he can have Jesus in his life?"
After he stated the number of steps: ask "Where are you right now?"

a. If "outside": "Do you hear him knocking?"
(If "No" : why not? What can I do to help you hear His knocking?")
b. If "Yes, I hear Him knocking": "Will you open the door?"
(If "No": Why not? What can I do to help you?)
c. If "Yes" : "What would Jesus do if you open your door?"
d. "He will come in" ("Yes, this is what we mean by receiving Jesus into our hearts.)
e. Ask him to repeat after you sentence by sentence in prayer.

13. Prayer:

"I thank you, Lord Jesus." (repeat by new believer)
"I agree that I am a sinner."
"I have sinned against you and I ask you to forgive me."
"I believe that you died on the cross for me."
"And I thank you for doing that for me."
"I also believe that you resurrected from the dead."
" Please give me the power to overcome sin."
"I want to open my door and receive you into my heart."
"Thank you for coming into my life to be my Lord and Savior."
"In Jesus' name I pray. Amen."

14. Explain "In Jesus' name" means we are praying in accordance to His wishes, and that
"Amen" means "Sincerely, from the bottom of my heart."

15. Instruct new Christian to:

a. Read his Bible (Give him one if necessary), daily if possible (to understand God's word, not as a ritual)
b. Pray anytime (to be thankful and to seek guidance)
c. Join a Christian group (fellowship, Sunday school, Worship etc.)

16. Introduce him/her to someone else who can help to follow up. Your job is "done" when
the new believer finds a group to belong to and show signs of growing spiritually.

I wish you every joy in leading someone to Christ. If you have any questions, or need help, please call me at 714-692-7747 or email richardyen@aol.com.
